Georgia Tech Professor Receives Honorary Doctorate from the University of Thessaly On May 8th, 2019, Professor John Peponis received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Thessaly, Greece. Georgia Tech Students and Faculty Receive Honors at AIA Georgia 2019 Design Awards The American Institute of Architects, Georgia Association (AIA Georgia) 2019 Design Awards recognized the top architectural projects by practitioners in Georgia and students currently enrolled in the state of Georgia. Merit Award Presented to Rising Bachelor of Science in Architecture Senior Phuong "Karen" Tran, rising Bachelor of Science in Architecture student, was inspired by the article as she began work on her project for the semester. In “’Immersion…,’” Tran says, “a sanctuary arises from darkness, light, and human emotions.” Smart Communities Address Transportation, Housing, Flooding Challenges Georgia Tech leads the pilot Georgia Smart Communities Challenge, which supports one-year projects to develop and implement smart design solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing the state. Ventulett NEXT Fellow, Vernelle Noel, Brings Design Expertise to Moog Hackathon The Moog Hackathon, sponsored by Moog Music, allows students the chance to build their own musical instrument with a Moog synthesizer for cash and prizes. The winning instrument, "Mission Control," was a series of three control panels that required expert coordination with multiple musicians to create an original sound. The new judge for this year, Vernelle Noel from the School of Architecture, brought her design expertise as a fresh voice to the Hackathon's metrics of design and musicality. The Big Game’s Big Home: What Makes a Stadium Super Bowl-Worthy? With the Super Bowl taking place in our own backyard, we felt it was apropos to take a look at what stadia represent and discuss how stadia design can add value to city’s identity. Benjamin Flowers, professor in the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, recently appointed associate vice provost for advocacy and conflict resolution, and our very own stadia expert. Marble Fairbanks Wins 2018 Best of Design Award for Public The Architect's Newspaper has announced their 2018 Best of Design Award winners, and Marble Fairbanks, founded by the School of Architecture Chair, Scott Marble, won in the Public category for the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
